A History of Translation and Translators

This course considers the role of translators in world history, with a primary focus on Europe and European interactions with the wider world. The emphasis is on the types of people who produced translations, their training, and the functions of the translations they produced. At times consideration will be given to how past translators thought about or theorized their work, but that is by no means a primary concern.
The course is provided in four four-hour sessions, each hour covering one topic from the broad period under consideration.
The first session is about the ancient world, considering scribal practices of the ancient Near East as they relate to translation, the role of translation in the Graeco-Roman cultural fusion (in the broadest sense), and the transmission of the scriptures of the world religions Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism from one language to another.
The second session examines the medieval period, considering in particular the transmission of Roman knowledge to the successor states of Western Europe, the transmission of Greek knowledge to the successor states of the Near East, and the fusion of these two streams of transmission in medieval Spain. Communication between European envoys and Mongol rulers will be considered, as will the role of translation in the late-medieval development of vernacular languages.
The third session will look at tools and techniques of translation in early-modern Europe, in the period of Renaissance and Reformation, and at the role of interpreters and translators in European encounters with the wider world. It will end by considering the approaches to literary translation taken in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The fourth and final session considers the institutionalization of translation in the Napoleonic age and afterwards, the importance of translators and translation bureaux in communicating Western advances to (primarily) Asian societies, the professionalization of translation in the twentieth century, and the beginnings of machine translation.
